Carl Andre is incredibly minimal. The majority of his work that I have found, I was very bored with. However I did find that even though he has traveled and is known all around the world, he was commissioned to do a piece of work here in Portland. It was called 144 Blocks and Stones, for the Portland Center for visual arts in 1973. It is made up of stone blocks, and natural stones he found at a local river. Andre intentionally placed the most beautiful side of the rocks down, to “to make the surfaces uniform.” I read an interview with him about this piece and he seemed almost disconnected from it. Either that or he is just incredibly pretentious and hates talking about his work.
