Richard Long

We've discussed Richard Long in class a bit. His art is mostly based upon long walks he has taken. They are responses to the environments he has traveled through. The piece pictured above is called White Water Line. Long created a mixture of china clay (a dazzling white stone) and water and poured it on the floor in a continuous line. What interests me about this piece, and about a lot of his gallery work, is how he's able to take the chaos of nature and confine it into neat geometric shape that contrasts it and complements it. It's orderly, but it doesn't feel tamed, it still has a very wild flow about it.
