Betty Beaumont

Betty Beaumont is known for her environmental and conceptual art which addresses many contemporary social problems. Her art encourages us to consider the impact we have on the environment and re-examine our beliefs and actions.

“I believe the future is created by the quality of the present and that art can contribute to the making of a different future.” –Betty Beaumont

The piece I chose to focus on is Ocean Landmark. Since completion in 1980, this underground sculpture, made from 500 tons of coal waste from a hydroelectric power plant has grown and developed into a productive new ecosystem. This project provided a unique method of recycling waste while establishing a habitat for fish and feeding people. Unfortunately the evolution of the artwork has not been recorded since completion due to limited visibility of the underwater site.
